Video Time!

Here are a few videos from ziplining and just one random one of Torsten. Still can't get the surfing video working. Again, there are more pictures and info about our trip on flickr. I'm trying to process photos and update each night since Kauai goes to bed early and there is not much else to do.

Cops: Kauai

Today was an interesting day. Steve wanted to go to Costco to develop his underwater film pictures, so we left the kids here at the house and headed to Lihue for some Costco shopping and with plans to check out the fern grotto and other things. The film scanner at Costco was broken so we skipped that and thought we try Wal-Mart. But before we made it out of the parking lot, this happened:
Steve was pulling out and saw a guy coming at him from behind. He said, "I don't think this guy's going to stop," and tried moving forward back into the spot. But not fast enough. The guy got us as we were trying to move out of his way. So the police were called, I spent a whole lot of time on the phone with the insurance company, and it will probably cost us some money even though it wasn't our fault.

We then traded in the car for a mini-van at Hertz. The van they gave us smelled like urine, so I asked for a new one. When we got close to Princeville, Steve realized he still had the keys for the first van in his pocket. So now we will be making another trip to Hertz before we leave. Fun! Even though most of our plans for the day were altered, we did get to see these great sights:

And we got some yummy cookies at a bakery in Kilauea. (Do you realize how hard it is to spell and pronounce all these Hawaiian place names?)

The boys skipped the shopping and spent the afternoon at the beach. They decided to go for some surf lessons, except for Torsten (not sure why, but I think he wishes he had). I will post some video of that tomorrow. Right now, Youtube is not being cooperative.

They had fun with that, so we may be going back for more of that tomorrow. Also on the agenda: hiking, kayaking, and ziplining!

The Mosquitos Love Me

Seriously. I have bites all over. I'm itching constantly. But other than that things are going well here in Kauai. All the boys want to do is swim in the pool. They are in there a couple of times a day, and last night they also tried out the hot tub. They complain when we try to take them somewhere, but as soon as we get going they forget about the pool.

Yesterday we took them to Queen's Bath, but the water was a little rough. After some further reading in the guide books last night, we realized that we may not have been in the correct spot, so we will have to check that out again. We were hoping for some swimming and seeing cool fish, but instead we found some rough waves and a warning that we could be swept out to sea.

Later most of the family went on a boat tour of the Napali Coast. Simon said it was better than video games.

Plans for today include a farmer's market in Hanalei and Anini Beach. Maybe a lighthouse and who knows what else. If you'd like to see more of our Hawaii adventures, check out flickr.

Puka Dogs Kauai

We've been in Kauai for a couple of days and so far are having a great time. There is too much to spend time blogging about, but the highlights can be seen on flickr. I should mention the Puka Dogs, however, since my dad gave us the info and a little spending cash to check it out.

They are a little different than a regular dog. The bun is big and uncut. They stab it on a spear then pour some sauce and relish into the hole then stuff in the dog and put a little more sauce on the top. They were good. Steve says they are maybe the best dog he's had (and not just that day!).

These dogs don't come cheap, however. Four dogs and three lemonades set us back $32. But that seems to be typical for Hawaii. We saw a box of twinkies at the grocery store for $8. You have to really love some twinkies to spend that kind of money on them.

The boys also seemed to enjoy the Puka Dogs.

After the Puka dogs we shared some Puka shaved ice, with ice cream on the bottom. It was pretty good and as you can see the boys enjoyed it too.

The house here is great. More on that later.
